Most families have their own Christmas traditions and activities; some keep the Christmas tree on the lawn while others hang garland ornaments from the gingerbread house. For many families, though, the gingerbread house is a part of the holiday that they remember more than any other item. There is something very special about decorating your own gingerbread house for a child. You can bring back memories of your childhood or create a new tradition for your own family. This Christmas you can make the gingerbread house part of the festivities by making it into an activity for the whole family.
Many people look forward to Christmas because of the shopping and decorating possibilities. It's certainly a lot of fun to plan the perfect Christmas vacation for your family, but there is one thing that many people forget to take into account: the gingerbread house. While the gingerbread cookies are certainly delicious, they can be bland and boring if they are not given some color and interest. To make your gingerbread house colorful and interesting, you can take a lot of time and energy to make it look as great as possible. This Christmas, don't just leave the cookie baking to grandma; give your kids the chance to help make the gingerbread house of their dreams.
One way to make decorating gingerbread houses easy for kids is to choose designs that are appropriate for their age and ability level. For younger children, it is often easier to go with more simple designs. These can be decorated using gingerbread dolls or clay gingerbread houses that can be bought at a dollar store or a children's craft store. Older children might appreciate going with something more elaborate, like gingerbread men or women or even candy canes. The point is to get the kids involved in the process, so that they will want to come back and color them all year long.
To get started with this project, have your children draw the gingerbread house on a large piece of graphite or cardstock paper. Once you've finished the drawing, have them cut out the gingerbread men or women that you've drawn. Then, let them dry it out on an old tablecloth or clothes pins. After that, have them cut out small pieces of bright red icing and use them to cover the gingerbread men or women with.
You can also let your kids make decorations out of regular construction paper and paint them one color – pink for girls and blue for boys. You can cut decals from the same paper into cute gingerbread house shapes, or you can make some of your own by using some cardboard and foil. For decorations around the gingerbread house, try using red and green construction paper. Cut some holes into the bottom of each piece and stick the holes onto the cardboard pieces.
You can find gingerbread houses all over the place, but they're not all fresh or attractive. If you want a more authentic look to your gingerbread house, then you should use gingerbread clay. Kids will enjoy being able to add their own personal touches to these adorable house shapes. And once they've finished coloring the gingerbread man or woman, you'll be glad you made this craft part of your Christmas decorating plans.
